Embroidered Bird Cushion (Part 2)

What's In My Hoop
Remember the bird cushion I started last Tuesday ?

Well, I have been happily stitching away at this and am quite pleased with the result

I tried using split stitch for the black outlines and decided that although I like the finished effect, it takes too long to work and doesn't flow as well as stem and back stitch

I wanted a mix of bright colours and bare outlines so used satin stitch for the leaves and worked the birds and clouds with tiny french knots

This gives a lovely shaded effect almost like paint daubs
Work the knots close together for a denser block of colour or farther apart as I have done on the clouds for a lighter more airy look

I added 3 rows of coloured fabric around the design finished with a border of linen

The next stage will be some crazy quilting style embroidery around the strips and maybe a beaded edging

Look out for the finished cushion next Tuesday

SS Embroidery Fashion Trends 2015

This week I have been taking a look at the trends for Sping/ Summer 2015 from an embroidery and crochet point of view and I can tell you I am excited by what I found!

My aim this week is to inspire you with all things 70's!
The biggest trend of the season it includes an eclectic mix of vintage fabrics in unexpected combinations of prints and textures, retro tailoring, tons of embroidery and denim - a lot of denim
Not forgetting patchwork including patchworked denim
But best of all in my humble opinion  - flares are back!

Today we take a look at the embroidered and crocheted lovliness sent down the runway by Emilio Pucci

Embroidered Birds Cushion

In My Hoop this week:
Continuing this weeks bird theme I am working on some birdy designs

I normally use back or stem stitch for outlines but thought I would experiment with something different
So I am trying out split stitch

My findings so far:
Split stitch takes more concentration than back stitch

I feel it doesn't flow as well around curved lines as stem stitch

It produces a nice slightly raised line which is finer than chain stitch and which I think will look good with filling stitches

I will carry on with this and show you my progress next week

Spring Interiors Embroidered Birds

The weekend weather here on the Fylde Coast was cold but bright and sunny and definately Spring like so me and Mr Bull headed out on a bracing walk

Watching the birds busy about their business nest building my thoughts turned to spring cleaning and freshening up my humble abode with new bedding and cushions

Our little feathered friends seem to have inspired designers for this years Spring and Summer trends and much to my delight many of them are also embroidered!

The Flower Quilt Project Block One

Last Thursday  I invited you to join me as I stitch an embroidered  flower quilt one block at a time
The first block is now stitched with the flower bouquet from my Fresh Florals pattern
and I'm pleased with the result

This is a log cabin block called Courthouse Steps also known as 'square in a square'
It's a nice easy block for beginners and one I use a lot as it makes a lovely frame for embroidery
It's made by stitching a strip to the opposite sides of the centre square then the 2 remaining sides
Repeat for as many rows you would like

Here are the stats:
Centre plain square 8.5ins cut (8 ins stitched)
Blue strips 3.5 ins
Pink strips 4 ins
Finished block size 21ins

Look out for the next block which will be posted on the first Thursday in March and will feature a new flower design
And don't forget I would love to hear from you if you are making your own flower quilt
